SALEM, MA, September 10, 2019 – Undersecretary for the Executive Office for Health and Human Services Lauren Peters, Salem Mayor Kimberley Driscoll, State Representatives Paul Tucker and Donald Wong, as well as local city councilors joined Richard Walsh, President and Chief Executive Officer of Walsh Brothers, Inc., David J. Roberts, M.D., President of North Shore Medical Center, other Partners HealthCare executives and the construction team members for a ribbon cutting ceremony to mark the opening of a new North Shore Medical Center (NSMC) Emergency Department, private inpatient rooms and the Epstein Center for Behavioral Health in Salem, Massachusetts.
With 120 beds, the new Epstein Center will be the largest inpatient psychiatric service embedded in an acute care hospital in Massachusetts. This facility will be closely affiliated with the Department of Psychiatry at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and will expand much-needed access to psychiatric care for North Shore patients. With an increase of 54 beds, the Center will provide state-of-the-art care efficiently and compassionately to adults, children and seniors.
The new 64,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art Emergency Department is nearly three times larger than the old space, offering more private patient rooms with three trauma suites and dedicated treatment areas for children, adults and behavioral health patients. The project also included the Pingree Floor, located above the Emergency Department, which provides 24 private inpatient rooms.
In addition, the Davenport 4 Main Entrance and parking area is also being reconfigured in front of the busy Davenport and Wheelock buildings. The reconfigured parking lot will improve Main Entrance accessibility and provide 55 additional parking spaces, new trees, landscaping, and new signage making the area more inviting for patients and their families.
Walsh Brothers provided construction management services for these important projects as part of a Partners HealthCare 10-year plan to redesign care on the North Shore. In addition to these projects on the NSMC-Salem campus, work continues for Walsh Brothers on the NSMC-Lynn campus. The Lynnfield Street Medical Village, a 42,000 square foot medical office building currently under construction, will provide a new home for urgent care service, as well as the North Shore Physicians Group primary/specialty care practice, NSMC Outpatient Behavioral Health, and other services.
