DeWolfe Boathouse

Perched on the Cambridge bank of the Charles River, the DeWolfe Boathouse is the center of crew activity for Boston University and the envy of every rowing club in Boston. This elegant wood-framed structure, built on a woodpile foundation, was completed from a riverside-moored barge. The waterfront building approach enabled the construction process to be streamlined and to overcome the many challenges inherent in building on the waterfront.

With the site offering no lay-down area and sandwiched between Memorial Drive and the Charles River, the necessity of underpinning Memorial Drive became a major challenge of the project. After an extensive analysis of alternative foundation systems, tiebacks were installed to secure the structure underneath this major thoroughfare. This ensured roadway stability without affecting utilities already in place.
