Two Walsh Brothers Projects Win Preservation Achievement Awards
BOSTON, MA, August 27, 2015 – Walsh Brothers, Incorporated announced today that two projects Walsh Brothers provided construction management services for have been awarded 2015 Preservation Achievement Awards from the Boston Preservation Alliance. The prestigious Preservation Achievement Awards are bestowed annually to honor outstanding achievements in historic preservation and compatible new construction in Boston. The projects receiving the awards include:
Hong Lok Project, Chinatown
Located on Essex Street in Chinatown, the Hong Lok Project consists of a series of historic storefronts within the Liberty Tree National Register District. The project, designed by Chia-Ming Sze Architect, Inc. entailed the preservation and reconstruction of three deteriorated historic facades and their integration into a new, single facility. Hong Lok House provides much-needed low income housing in Chinatown as well as an Adult Day Health Program and Senior Center. All three building facades were restored or partially reconstructed, with a new building built behind tying them together. One of these buildings, a 3-story Italianate, is the oldest wooden commercial building in Boston.
"Walsh Brothers' insights from years of working on Boston's most historic buildings, made them an invaluable partner, assisting the Hong Lok House to creatively weave the huge demand for affordable housing with the preservation of local history and neighborhood character." said Greg Galer, Executive Director of the Boston Preservation Alliance.
Brigham Patient Parking Garage and Thea and James M. Stoneman Centennial Park, Longwood Medical Area
"The congested Longwood Medical Area is a challenging place, with healthcare demands understandably the highest priority. While meeting healthcare needs is clearly the primary priority for the Longwood Medical Area, we're pleased that Walsh Brothers, in conjunction with Brigham and Women's Hospital, developed a creative solution through which preservation, healthcare and general public benefit can coexist," said Galer. This project ambitiously resolved parking problems, restored the façades of three historic buildings, and revitalized the open space.
The project team, inclusive of Halvorson Design Partnership, Leggat McCall Properties, McPhail Associates, RDK Engineers, Simon Design Engineering and Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Inc., devised an ambitious plan to provide below-grade parking for 400 cars and 95 bicycles and built a landscape over the garage that recreated the much-needed open space for the Hospital and the surrounding neighborhood. "In this case by bringing back the grand entrance public park and restoring the classical facade of their historic Peter Bent Brigham Hospital" said Galer.
