The MassArt Design and Media Center Tops Off
Commemorating the completion of the steel erection, the topping off ceremony for MassArt's Design and Media Center took place on Friday, October 3rd. Members of the MassArt community, along with project team members from DCAMM, Ennead Architects, Walsh Brothers, and the ironworkers gathered to celebrate this important project milestone. The ceremony began with a beam signing, which afforded the students, staff, faculty and guests the opportunity to autograph the beam and provide words of praise and encouragement to those who have contributed to the project. The steel I-beam was adorned with an American Flag and a sapling, symbolizing the success of the project thus far as well as bestowing good luck for the future of the building and its inhabitants. Reaching this critical project milestone was cause for great celebration by the project team, who worked diligently to erect the steel.
Scheduled for completion in 2016, the Design and Media Center will feature a transparent glass façade that will extend out to Huntington Avenue and create a new entrance to the MassArt campus. The new building will create a "central artery" that will connect the Tower building and the North, South, and East halls and will enable people to move more freely throughout the campus. The 40,000 square-foot building will include a 3-story sky-lit exhibition hall, a 150-seat multi-function lecture hall, a 2-story gallery and critique space, lighting and sound studios, a modernized wood shop, a new fabrication lab, two large studio spaces, a product development laboratory and several project and installation rooms for research and collaborative activities.
