The state-of-the-art Science Center is located at the heart of Emmanuel's campus providing sweeping views of the Boston City skyline and the Fenway's historic emerald necklace. The 47,500 SF 4-story academic science building establishes Emmanuel as a distinctive of learning in both the liberal arts and sciences while simultaneously taking advantage of their premiere location at the center of the Longwood Medical Area. The energy efficient Maureen Murphy Wilkens Science Center will provide Emmanuel with unique academic programs, interactive learning opportunities, student study areas, faculty/student research space and offices, 120 underground parking spaces, and laboratories for the following disciplines: chemistry, biology, biochemistry, physics, chemistry, psychology, and neuroscience. The building also features a computer classroom, meeting space, lounge spaces, and a seminar room. President, Janet Eisner, SND and Treasurer, Anne Mary Donovan, SND spoke at length during the ribbon cutting ceremony of their over 60-year partnership with Walsh Brothers. Emmanuel College selected Walsh Brothers to embark upon the construction of the complex science center based on team's successful collaboration with Goody Clancy & Associates on the College's Jean Yawkey Student Center and because of their long storied history with the college. The construction of this science center, along with a 60,000 square foot underground garage, in the midst of the college's busy urban campus provided several logistical challenges which Walsh Brothers was proactive in addressing early on in the process. This comprehensive construction project required the demolition of the existing St. James Hall. The Walsh Brothers team, working closely with Goody Clancy & Associates, developed an enabling package of work which successfully facilitated an early construction start during the summer months. Walsh Brothers successfully maintained student safety throughout the life of the project and remained on schedule delivering the state-of-the art science center in plenty of time for the Fall 2009 academic year. The new science center has been met with rave reviews from students, stakeholders, and the local community. Walsh Brothers is a fourth generation, family owned construction management firm headquartered in Boston. The firm, founded in 1901, has extensive experience in higher education construction and has worked for many of the leading educational institutions in the Boston area.
