September 14, 2009 - Walsh Brothers, Incorporated, a Boston-based construction management firm, with Women & Infants' Hospital representatives, staff, dignitaries, and 17 recent Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) "alumni" took part in a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating the unveiling of the landmark South Pavilion. The South Pavilion is now home to a state-of-the art Neonatal Intensive Care Building which is the largest antenatal care center in the country as well as a model for future neonatal services.
In order to meet the growing demands of the community and after 5 years of extensive planning the South Pavilion NICU building was completed under budget and ahead of schedule by the Walsh Brothers team. The 5 -Story 140,000 SF South Pavilion was programmed and designed by Anshen + Allen in accordance with evidence based design in pediatric care. The spacious new 30-bed antenatal care unit serves high-risk women in maintaining their pregnancies. The antenatal unit features private rooms equipped with generous accommodations for visitors. The South Pavilion is also home to the largest NICU in the country with 80-beds and 70 private rooms which afford families to take part in their infant's earliest months.

The Walsh Brothers team worked hard to identify opportunities to expedite the construction process and marginalize any effect on the sensitive and active existing hospital abutting the new building. Early on the Walsh Brothers team identified an innovative site logistics approach that allowed for the use of two electronic cranes simultaneously. As a result, the team was able to complete and turnover the Hospital's new entrance and lobby six months ahead of the original proposed schedule. Because electronic tower cranes produce less noise and fewer vibrations, the approach substantially reduced the construction impact on the active Hospital entrance and lobby, which successfully remained operational throughout the life of the project without interruption.

Walsh Brothers, Incorporated is honored to have had the opportunity to shepherd the construction management of this vital hospital addition. Women & Infants' echoed this sentiment in a statement issued by the hospital, "In a place where miracles happen every day, the Walsh Brothers team created a synthesis that balances functionality, aesthetics, economy and sustainability; reflecting the hospital's values and emphasis on patient - and family-centered care."
