Walsh Brothers, Incorporated, a Boston-based construction management firm, in conjunction with Cannon Design Group, recently completed construction of the Boston University's (BU) state-of-the-art residence facility, the John Hancock Student Village Residences Phase 2.
Fondly referred to by the BU community as StuVi 2, the new residence complex signifies the university's multi-decade commitment to providing housing for all undergraduate students who desire to live on campus. Nine years prior Walsh Brothers led the construction management process of the 1st phase of StuVi as well as the Agganis Arena. With the recent construction of the John Hancock Student Village Residences Phase 2, the University, once known as a commuter school, now proudly houses 75% of its undergraduate population on campus. Located on the western campus the 25-story steel and glass 960-bed residence tower features apartment and suite style accommodations geared toward upper classmen and provides sweeping panoramic views of the city of Boston and the Charles river. The new residence hall has many luxurious features not often found in an undergraduate living space including large private baths, floor length mirrors, futuristic interior finishes and fixtures, state-of-the art media room, soundproof music rooms, and luxurious common rooms which feature the latest technological advancements.
In response to an aggressive schedule that required occupancy for the 2009 academic year, Walsh Brothers developed a fast-track approach to purchasing and erecting the exterior façade of the building by utilitizing a componentized system. This system ultimately shaved months of the building schedule. Early release packages, the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM), extensive and thorough enabling work, adherence to the highest level of safety, and a stringent quality assurance/quality control process resulted in the project finishing ahead of schedule and under budget. Over the last fifty years Walsh Brothers has had the opportunity to serve as Boston University's builder of choice for most of its Charles River Campus and is proud to continue our long lasting partnership.
Walsh Brothers is a fourth generation, family owned construction management firm headquartered in Boston. The firm, founded in 1901, has extensive experience in higher education construction and has worked for many of the leading educational institutions in the Boston area.
