The new 50-foot flagpole was integrated into the design of the newly constructed patient drop-off area.
"Having radiation oncology available through the Vernon Cancer Center facilitates our collaborative approach with MGH and provides multidisciplinary care for cancer patients," said Ellen Moloney, Vice President for Outpatient Services, Newton-Wellesley Hospital. "We enjoyed working with Walsh Brothers to make this Center a reality and look forward to its opening soon." To make the experience as comfortable as possible for patients, the new space will provide access to wireless Internet service as well as options for music during treatment. Designers have created a soothing environment throughout the Center with comforting aesthetic features to create a warm and relaxing atmosphere. In order to address a growing demand for inpatient care, cancer care, and building upon a commitment to provide leading-edge healthcare to the community, Newton-Wellesley Hospital selected Walsh Brothers to provide construction management services on the Joan and James Vernon Cancer Center, main entrance renovation, and a new 24-bed Inpatient Pavilion. This multi-phased project was designed by TRO Jung|Brannen.
The Joan and James Vernon Cancer Center, expected to open in September, will be located on the site of the hospital's former Emergency Department. Walsh Brothers guided the complex construction process, which required careful phasing and logistics to ensure minimal disruption to ongoing operations in the hospital buildings bordering the site. However, the biggest challenge posed by this endeavor was keeping the main patient drop-off and receiving area for the entire hospital active during construction while simultaneously revamping the existing entrance, and creating an adjacent brand new Cancer Center entrance. The Vernon Cancer Center will house a state-of-the-art radiation-oncology department providing advanced treatment and care to its patients with the most current and advanced technology, including a linear accelerator, CT simulators, Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), and Image-Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT). The building will be designed and constructed to accommodate future growth. The new inpatient pavilion will feature 24 state-of-the-art private rooms for orthopedic patients and is scheduled to open in October. "Walsh Brothers is thrilled to have been able to guide the construction management process on this much needed Cancer Center, main entrance, and Inpatient Bed Unit for Newton-Wellesley Hospital," said Richard C. Walsh, President and CEO of Walsh Brothers, Incorporated. Walsh Brothers is a fourth-generation, family owned construction management firm in Boston.
