In attached photo, Richard C. Walsh, President and CEO of Walsh Brothers, general contractor for the Women & Infants Hospital addition, is shown with Betsy Akin, State Director for the March of Dimes. During a half-hour luncheon fundraiser hosted by Women & Infants at the construction site, Walsh, construction workers and sub-contractors donated $6,500 towards the March for Babies to help give every baby a healthy chance on life.

This contribution was added to that raised by more than 5,000 walkers-individuals, corporate sponsors and families-who turned out for the March for Babies walk on April 26 at Colt State Park, raising a total $410,000. Picerne Real Estate Group is the Event Sponsor and Summer Infant is the Family Sponsor for March for Babies.

"The luncheon fundraiser hosted by Walsh Brothers and Women & Infants Hospital is a great example of the enthusiasm and support that people throughout Rhode Island have demonstrated in raising money during these tough economic times. We are very grateful to the thousands of people who turned out for March for Babies and contributed to be sure the March of Dimes can continue to provide help and hope for babies and their families," said Betsy Akin, state director of the March of Dimes.

Each week in Rhode Island, about 30 babies are born premature. Preterm birth is the leading cause of newborn death. The March of Dimes raises money through March for Babies and other fundraising events to support research, education and programs to help ensure that all babies have a healthy start on life.
