Boston, MA - On Thursday, April 14, 2009, members and supporters of the Dana-Farber Community including Mayor Thomas Menino, Yawkey Foundation members, doctors, nurses, donors, constructors, iron workers, cancer patients and survivors gathered together to recognize the steel topping off, construction milestone of the new Dana-Farber Cancer Institute's Yawkey Center for Cancer. The event symbolized the completion of the steel erection of the 14-story facility which also includes 7 floors of below-grade parking.
Two steel I-beams were painted white and placed in the lobby and auditorium for supporters to sign in tribute to the new facility. It wasn't long before heartfelt messages adorned the length of the beam such as, "In loving memory of my wife", "We miss you Mom!", and "May our mission be accomplished soon". Mayor Menino addressed the crowd, speaking candidly about his family's experience with the Dana -Farber Cancer Institute (DFCI) as well as his own personal battle with cancer and his treatment at Dana-Farber. Mayor Menino also emphasized the importance of this groundbreaking center for cancer care and what it means to the City of Boston. Edward Benz, Jr. MD, President of DFCI, offered congratulations to the Walsh Brothers team for their remarkable efforts and for reaching out to the children undergoing treatment at Dana-Farber. Dr. Benz ended the ceremony by heralding the new facility as a welcome beacon of hope in a field where there is often so little.
The fourteen-story Yawkey Center for Cancer Care will provide the Longwood Medical Area with a state-of-the art clinical treatment and research space complete with 100 exam rooms, 15 patient/family consultation rooms, and a much needed 7-story below grade parking facility. The cancer center will be a green facility that is both environmentally and socially conscious and will connect Dana-Farber its clinical partners at Partners' Brigham and Women Hospital and Children's Hospital, allowing for seamless care for its patients and families. The new building will also serve as a key link between all the current Dana-Farber facilities, including the Susan Smith Building.
